The Gardens

Covering an area of approximately ten hectares with a perimeter of 1,500m enclosed by a boundary wall featuring portals and windows, the Paduan architect Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti began designing a green space for the Pisani family in 1719. This design created a dialogue between the French gardens of André Le Nôtre at Versailles and the Venetian tradition of the enclosed garden, decorated with hornbeam hedges, shaped boxwoods, citrus houses, jasmine trellises, and fruit trees.

Several architectural structures from the initial project remain visible, such as the famous Labyrinth, the Exedra, the Stables set against the backdrop of the large central parterre, and the elegant 18th-century Kafé Haus. The latter is surrounded by a ring of water and stands atop an artificial hillock, which was used as an ice house during the hot season.

During the Napoleonic era (1807–1814), the garden lost its classical Italian style to take on a more French character. A romantic grove was added to the northwest, and an area to the northeast was acquired to serve as a space for the Greenhouses and Orangerie.

During the Austrian period (1814–1866), tropical greenhouses were added and large tree specimens were planted. The construction of a second ice house dates back to 1839; located west of the Stables among the trees of the grove, it was decorated with statue fragments from park structures demolished during the Napoleonic era.

Finally, the long boxwood hedges, the wisteria tunnels on either side of the Exedra, and the large water basin of the parterre bear witness to a 20th-century garden revival culture. The basin was designed in 1909 by the then-superintendent Max Ongaro, adapting a project by the Hydrographic Institute of the Royal Water Authority, and has now become a defining feature of Villa Pisani’s aesthetic identity.
