The Stables

An architectural masterpiece by Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti, the Stables of Villa Pisani were already under construction in 1720, at the very beginning of the grand project that would lead the Pisani family to redesign the bend of the Brenta River near Strà in monumental style.

Inside the Stables, a series of twenty-six wooden horse sculptures from the workshop of Andrea Brustolon and Francesco Bertos decorated an equal number of columns in Verona red marble, positioned to mark the wooden stalls for twenty-four horses, one of the Pisani family’s proudest possessions. Fewer than ten sculptures from the original series have survived. The others, reinstalled in situ in 2026, are nineteenth-century copies.

In Frigimelica’s design, a sort of circular pavilion topped by an obelisk and decorated with sculptures and greenery was to rise between the Stables and the main Palace. This mysterious architectural element, probably conceived in dialogue with the Exedra, was dismantled during the Napoleonic era to transform the green area at the center of the gardens into a riding arena.

Facing today onto the twentieth-century axis that crosses the central parterre of the gardens, the Stables with their double reflection in the water still constitute one of the scenic highlights of the entire Villa Pisani complex.
